Podiatric nail surgery (patrial or total nail avulsion) is a procedure performed by our team to address problematic toenails that cannot be effectively treated with conservative methods. Common indications for nail surgery include ingrown toenails, recurrent fungal nail infections, or nail deformities that cause pain, discomfort, or infection.
In cases of ingrown toenails, the edges of the nail typically grow into the surrounding skin, causing pain, inflammation, and infection.
Podiatrists may perform a partial or total nail avulsion (removal) to relieve pressure and allow healing. In most instances, a matrixectomy is undertaken to prevent the nail from regrowing, offering a long-term solution.
Nail surgery is performed under local anesthesia, ensuring the procedure is painless. The podiatrist carefully removes the problematic portion of the nail or entire nail. After the surgery, patients are advised on post-operative care, which includes keeping the area clean and dry, avoiding tight footwear, and following up for any necessary dressing changes.
While nail surgery is highly effective, it is typically considered when conservative treatments, such as antibiotics, topical treatments, or changes in footwear, have failed. The goal is to provide lasting relief, restore foot health, and improve the patient’s comfort and mobility.
