The primary goal of podiatric wart management is to remove the wart and prevent it from spreading. Since warts can be contagious, it's essential to address them promptly and take precautions to avoid transmission to others or other parts of the body.
Conservative treatments for warts often involve topical treatments, which softens the wart tissue, allowing it to be gradually removed. This may be combined with cryotherapy (freezing) or other chemical treatments that destroy the wart tissue. Over-the-counter treatments can be effective, but they may take several weeks to show results, and they may not be suitable for all types of warts. For more persistent or painful warts professional treatments, such as topical applications or cryotherapy are performed, where liquid nitrogen is applied to freeze the wart. This causes the wart to blister, reducing blood supply to the site, which aids clearance. Minor surgical excision may also be performed for larger or particularly stubborn warts, where the wart is physically removed.
Preventative measures include wearing protective footwear in communal areas like pools or locker rooms, as the virus thrives in damp environments. It is also advised to maintain good foot hygiene to prevent wart recurrence.
By addressing warts early and using appropriate treatments, our team of podiatrists help patients achieve clear, pain-free feet and prevent further complications.
