Diabetes is one of the biggest challenges confronting Australia’s healthcare system, with around 1.8 million Australians suffering from this disease.
While there is currently no cure for diabetes, you can live an enjoyable life by learning about the condition and effectively managing it;
1. See your podiatrist regularly
Your feet may show early signs of change due to diabetes. It’s important that you see your podiatrist at least once a year to check your blood flow and sensation of your feet.
2. Moisturise daily
A common lower limb complication is poor healing and ulceration to the feet and lower leg, which occurs when inadequate oxygen travels to this region. Using cream regularly helps to maintain skin integrity. This reduces the likelihood of tissue breakdown, preventing pain, wounds and/or infection.
3. Keep Moving
By incorporating 20 minutes of exercise daily, whether a gentle walk or swim, you reduce the stress placed on your feet and improve overall general health. Activity is also linked to the reduction of stress which is a common cause for glucose levels to elevate.
4. Keep a log-book
Tracking your daily glucose levels helps you to monitor any change. This is a way of staying proactive and identifying factors that may cause an elevation in your levels.
